OUR STORIES

Hope Andrus

"Before I got to college, I always have felt like the odd one out. My friends were always asking me to go out and have fun. I kept telling them that I couldn’t and they never understood what the problem was. They kept saying “You need to get over it” or “just sleep it off”. I explained to them that Bipolar 1 is hard and sometimes it’s like wanting to break away from these chains, but somehow you never could. Even the counselor at my school treated me like a broken machine. I couldn’t help but to feel alienated. These people didn’t understand that all mental illnesses are just like any other disease or sickness. NAMI on campus is working to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and works toward providing each and every person resources and help to those who need it. I am proud to see an organization like this on my campus, and proud to say I’m a part of it."

Nelly Dixon

"My name is Nelly Dixon and I am a proud member of NAMI TWU. Since I have joined this chapter I have come to realize that there are so many people out there that genuinely care about mental illness and view it as a serious disease. For all the students out there that are struggling with a mental illness or know of someone with a mental illness, this group helps shed light on the confusion and frustration that comes attached. I do not feel so alone anymore; knowing that there are people out there with the same issues. NAMI helps build your strength and supplies courage for those who need it. Our TWU chapter has surprised me this past semester. All the people involved are so kind and empathetic. TWU NAMI has many great members that are willing to work with and support your thoughts and feelings over mental illness"

Once a month we offer a free screening of a movie related to mental health, followed by a discussion.
